Two years of data center losses: $4.1B. Microsoft earns that in 11 days.
We added up the 25 most expensive data center losses of the past two years: cloud outages, battery fires, and, new this year, missiles and drones. The total runs from $2.6B to $5.6B, with a midpoint of $4.1B. That is 11 days of Microsoft's profit, 11 days of Alphabet's and 12.5 days of NVIDIA's. For most of the world it is far larger: more than five Pacific nations' yearly economies combined, and close to Fiji's.
Two years of losses, earned back in under three weeks
Days of net income each company needs to cover the two-year loss, using its latest full fiscal year. Solid bar: the low estimate. Pale bar: up to the high estimate. Scale: 0 to 20 days.
Counting revenue instead of profit, Alphabet takes about 90 hours to bring in $4.1B, Microsoft about 109 hours and NVIDIA about 167.
NVIDIA's data center segment alone brought in $193.7B in fiscal 2026. At that pace it covers the two-year loss in about 7.8 days.
The last 30 days of war damage, midpoint about $507M, equals roughly a day and a half of profit for any of the three.
The two-year bill, measured in national economies
Each grey bar is a country's entire output for one year. The red bar is the data center loss. The pale part of the red bar is the gap between our low and high estimates.
Even the low estimate, $2.6B, beats the yearly GDP of Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Tonga and Samoa added together, about $1.9B.
At $5.6M a day, the losses matched Tuvalu's entire yearly economy, about $62M, every 11 days for two years.
The last 30 days of war damage, midpoint about $507M, is roughly one year of Tonga's economy, about $500M.
War overtook outages as the largest single cause
Solid bar: low estimate. Thin line: up to the high estimate. Scale runs to $3.5B.
“War now destroys cloud regions outright. AWS lost a whole region and part of another, with permanent customer data loss.”
From the compiled case notes
The categories count different things. Outage figures are mostly losses to customers during hours of downtime. War and fire figures are mostly destroyed buildings and equipment, and the customer losses from those events are largely unknown. So the war share is probably understated, not overstated.
Twenty-five losses, October 2024 to October 2026
What the cases say
“Customer data held only there is permanently lost.”
AWS Bahrain and UAE, status as of 15 September 2026
“Multi-zone design did not survive missiles and drones hitting zones in the same metro area.”
Pattern across the AWS Middle East cases
“Backups decided who survived.” Parkovyi and Datagroup clients kept their data through EU and backup sites. NIRS and Matrix Cellular lost theirs.
Pattern across war and fire cases
“Lithium-ion battery rooms caused three of the four fires.”
NIRS Korea, X in Hillsboro, and reportedly New Delhi
“Insurance mostly will not pay for war.” War exclusions push the cost onto operators and customers.
Pattern across war cases
Replacing the damaged Yandex equipment will take about six months, bought on the most expensive market in years because of sanctions.

How the numbers were built
Totals
- Range: the sum of every event's low figure and every event's high figure. Midpoint is the average of the two.
- Per day: the total divided by 730 days in the window.
- Last 30 days: the Yandex strikes of 8 to 11 October 2026 and the Kyiv strikes from 19 September to 1 October 2026. The grouped Kyiv row also includes a Kyivstar site hit on 11 September.
Country comparisons
- GDP: approximate yearly GDP in current US dollars, World Bank 2023. Tuvalu $62M, Nauru $154M, Kiribati $279M, Tonga $500M, Samoa $940M, Seychelles $2.1B, Fiji $5.4B.
- A country's GDP is a yearly flow and these losses are mostly one-off. The comparison shows scale, not equivalence.
- Companies: GAAP net income for the latest full fiscal year. Microsoft FY2026 (to June 2026) $133.7B on $331.8B revenue. Alphabet 2025 $132.2B on $402.8B. NVIDIA FY2026 (to January 2026) $120.1B on $215.9B, of which data center revenue $193.7B. Days = loss ÷ (net income ÷ 365).
Limits
- 19 of 25 rows rely wholly or partly on estimates, and 15 are estimates only.
- No operator has published a damage figure for any war-damaged site. War rows are order-of-magnitude.
- The Yandex and Kyiv reporting is days to weeks old, and both sides have reasons to inflate or minimise damage.
